After leaving school Taylor had a couple of unsuccessful trials at local football clubs, Hartlepool and Newcastle. He got his first big break when current team Horden Colliery appointed the former Sunderland full-back Dick Malone as their new Manager. After three months at the club, in December 1985, Malone recommended Taylor, his team’s top scorer, to Leeds United via their chief scout David Blakey. He reckoned that local council-worker Taylor had the ability to score goals at League level. Taylor went for trials at Leeds in December 1985. He went on to score twelve goals for the Juniors in the last fifteen games of that season and signed a two year contract once he turned eighteen in 1985. He progressed into the reserve side and became the season’s leading goalscorer at that level. His first team debut came on 12th April 1986. He lost his first team spot after Billy Bremner was sacked. He scored nine goals in forty-two League games, nine of which were as a substitute. He was swapped for Howard Wilkinson favourite, Carl Shutt, from Bristol City, then managed by Joe Jordan on 23rd March 1989 for £200,000. He went on to being named City’s Player of the Year in 1990. His time at Bristol came to an end when West Bromwich Albion signed him on 31st January 1992 for £300,000. At Ashton Gate he scored fifty League goals from ninety-six starts and ten from the bench. Things did not start that well for him at West Brom and within six months of signing, Bobby Gould was sacked and Ossie Ardiles took over. But, West Brom secured promotion via the play-off final at Wembley in the 1993-94 season with a 3-0 win over Port Vale. West Brom struggled for the next few seasons. As a result, Taylor left the First Division for the Premiership. In his first spell at the Hawthorns he scored ninety-six League goals in two hundred and eleven starts and twenty-seven games from the bench. He twice went out on loan to Bolton Wanderers. He scored once in four League matches in a one month spell in January, and when he returned for the last two months of the season he notched two further League goals from six starts and two from the bench. Taylor signed permanently on 2nd July 1998 for Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee, and went on to score eighteen more League goals from forty-seven starts and eighteen from the bench. Taylor returned to his footballing home, the Hawthorns, on transfer deadline day in March 2000 for £90,000, on the same day as four other players. With West Brom poised to be relegated, Taylor's five goals in eight games kept the Baggies safe from relegation. However, in the next two seasons, West Brom, finished in the play-offs and then got promoted automatically, with Taylor scoring the goal against Crystal Palace that secured promotion to the Premier League. Unfortunately for Taylor, he only played four games for the Baggies in the Premier League. Taylor’s contract ran out at the end of that season, his testimonial year, and the club decided not to renew his contract. He played his last game for his beloved club on the last game of the season, after scoring another seventeen goals and playing another eighty-six League games although forty-one of those were as a substitute. Taylor then spent a season at Cheltenham Town. He scored seven League goals from twenty-eight games, including nine as a substitute. He then joined Tamworth in 2004. In 2005 Taylor signed for Tamworth for a further twelve months. At Tamworth he scored eighteen League goals from sixty appearances, including nineteen as a substitute. Following his release from Tamworth in May 2006, Taylor linked up with Kidderminster Harriers for pre-season training and signed a non-contract deal with the club in September 2006. Taylor left Kidderminster in January 2007 having made two League appearances. He subsequently retired from professional football and has since set up his own promotions company, Super Bob Events.(Leeds United Player Details)

Welsh Under-Twenty-One and Under-Twenty-Three International, he went on to gain fifty-one caps for his country. He started as a Junior with Wrexham, signing professional forms in May 1972 and built a strong reputation in the next half a dozen seasons which culminated in Manchester United signing him in November 1978 for £300,000. He had scored thirty-three goals in two hundred and thirty League games at the Racecourse Ground, of which thirteen had been as a substitute. He enhanced his reputation there scoring eleven goals in ninety League starts in almost three years. However, in August 1981 he moved to Everton, for £450,000. But, after he refused to play in the Reserves, after just ten appearances in the League without scoring, he moved to Brighton and Hove Albion in November 1981 for £400,000. His football life had become a succession of quickly changing surroundings as he accumulated clubs quicker than the years flew by. He only managed twenty League games for Brighton of which two were as a substitute. August 1982 saw him move to Stoke City for £200,000, where he scored fourteen goals in fifty-seven League starts. Soon he was off to Chelsea in January 1984 for £75,000. At Stamford Bridge he scored nine goals in in forty-three League starts and one from the bench. After his return he was sold to Second Division Shrewsbury Town in August 1988, where he scored once in forty League appearances. Leeds United were his next stop in June 1989 for £10,000. He soon picked up an injury which restricted his progress and he was limited to starting just three games in the first team but also played spasmodically in the Reserves when he was fit. He was loaned to Stoke City in March 1990, making eight League starts, before signing for them permanently on a free transfer in August 1990. He scored seven goals in thirty-two starts in the Leagueand aso six from the bench before completing the circle of his playing career when he rejoined Wrexham in July 1991 finishing his League career there with two goals from thirty-four starts in the League.(Leeds United Player Details)

Tinkler

Mark Roland/Mark

01-10-1991

1991-1997

IF/WH

Bishop Auckland

24-10-1974

Tinkler started his career in Leeds United’s youth team. He joined Leeds from school as a trainee and signed professional forms in July 1993 after he made his senior debut as an eighteen-year-old. Tinkler was part of the Leeds Youth team that won the 1993 FA Youth Cup. He excelled in central defence in the Final games against Manchester United but played virtually all of his senior football in midfield. Leeds won 4-1 on aggregate, triumphing over the favoured Manchester team which included future Internationals David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Robbie Savage and Keith Gillespie. An England Schools and Youth player, he was a member of the England Under-Eighteen squad that won the European Championship. He wore David Batty’s No.4 shirt at Sheffield United when making his debut but found opportunities scarce as he was used mostly as midfield cover for the superb Leeds midfield of Strachan, Batty, McAllister and Speed. A broken ankle while playing in a Reserve game in the following season put his career on hold, but he showed signs of getting back into the first team picture during 1994-95 and was included for the away hame at Sheffield Wednesday. However, after just six minutes he was subjected to an horrific two footed tackle which saw Gordon Watson sent off and Tinkler stretchered off and sidelined for another long period. In his first four seasons at Leeds, Tinkler started just nineteen first team matches and made five substitute appearances. In order to gain more first team appearances Tinkler was loaned to York City in March 1997 and Tinkler made nine appearances for the Minstermen. He then joined them permanently for a fee of £75,000 on 26th March 1997. When York’s ex-manager Alan Little became the new manager of Southend United, Tinkler decided to follow him and he was signed in time for the 1999-2000 season for £40,000. With the Minstermen he scored six League goals from ninety-two starts and two games from the bench. His first season at Southend was a successful one and he made forty-one League appearances. He started his second season at Southend strongly but it was unfortunately cut short after he fell off a ladder. On 2nd November 2000 Tinkler sign for Hartlepool United on a free transfer, despite protests from the Southend fans. With Southend he managed just one League goal from fifty-five starts and one substitute appearance. Tinkler’s Hartlepool debut came against Scunthorpe and he immediately cemented his place in the first team and formed a formidable partnership with Paul Stephenson and Tommy Miller. He played a pivotal role in helping Hartlepool make the play-offs scoring three goals in twenty-eight League appearances. The 2001-2002 season saw Tinkler score more goals than he had done previously in his whole career as he managed to net nine and once again helped Hartlepool make the play-offs. In 2002-03 Tinkler maintained his inspired form and was part of Hartlepool’s promotion winning team and he once again broke his seasons’ goals tally, this time netting thirteen goals in forty-five League starts. One of Tinkler’s most notable performances came in the 4-3 win against Wrexham where he managed to score his first hat-trick. During the following seasons, Tinkler would once again play a vital part in Hartlepool’s team as he helped establish them in League One. He was voted into the PFA Division Three Team of the Year in 2003-04. Unfortunately, injury hampered Tinkler’s latter career and he has struggled to play the same number of games that he had previously acheived. He was released by Hartlepool in May 2007, after two hundred starts and eleven games from the bench in the League, in which he scored thirty-four goals. He joined Scottish First Division side Livingston in July 2007 on a free transfer. After eighteen League starts and a further game from the bench, in which he scored twice, he was released by Livingston when his contract expired in May 2008. He joined Whitby Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division in June 2008, he started eight League games and came off the bench for another three. He twisted an ankle after sixteen minutes against Prescot Cables on 4th October 2008. He joined Shildon AFC and had made sixteen starts and three substitute appearances up to the end of September 2009. He joined Esh Winning in November 2009, where he scored once in eight appearances, by the end of 2009-10. (Leeds United Player Details)

He joined Leeds from them on 9th September 1950, at their club record fee of £2,000, but had to be content with a regular place with the Reserves before breaking into the first team in September 1951, scoring once in five consecutive League appearances before Harold Williams returned to the team. The Welshman and Peter Harrison were consistant wingmen and, after Harrison had departed, Tyrer staked his claim scoring twice in twenty-one games in the1952-53 season, seeing off the challenge of Jimmy Langley, after Williams was sidelined with a broken leg and George Meek arrived. With Meek often unavailable due to National Service and the veteran Eddie Burbanks only a temporary threat he was able to play thirteen League games in 1953-54, scoring once. The arrival of Andy McCall again saw him out of favour and he moved to Non-League Peterborough United in July 1954 before returning to the Football League with Shrewsbury Town in June 1955. He had one season at Gay Meadow scoring three goals in twenty-four games before moving to Aldershot a year later. He went on the become a fan favourite there scoring nine times in two hundred and thirty-four League games before going back into Non-League football with Hereford United and then Fleet FC in 1964.(Leeds United Player Details)

He started with Non-League Letchworth Garden City at seventeen in August 1977, but in April 1998 he joined Sheffield United, scoring four goals from ten League games, four of which were as a substitute, before First Division Everton paid £80,000 to take him to Goodison Park in March 1979. He continued to gain valuable experience scoring six goals in twenty-six League games, but a change of manager saw him out of favour before Newcastle United bought him in August 1981 for £125,000. He enjoyed an excellent two years on Tyneside as they gained promotion to the top flight as he twice top scored and netted thirty-nine goals in eighty-one League starts before moving to Sheffield Wednesday for £150,000 in August 1983. At Hillsborough he maintained his goalscoring form with thirty-three goals in seventy-two League starts and four from the bench. He failed to keep up his good rate after joining West Bromwich Albion for £285,000 in July 1985, scoring nine in thirty-League starts and two from the bench. His next move was to Maine Road to join Manchester City for £80,000 in October 1986 where he regained his scoring ability with twenty-six goals in sixty-five League games, of which nine were from the bench, before returning for a second spell at Hillsborough for £50,000 in September 1988. He never seemed to be able to produce his former form from this point and only managed three goals in fourteen League starts and eight games from the bench. His former Manager Howard Wilkinson took him to Elland Road in February 1990 for £50,000 and he played a small part in United's promotion to the First Division but spent much of his time in the Reserves or on loan. He scored once in five League starts and one game from the bench for Luton Town in March 1992, and he failed to score from three League starts and two games as a substitute in January 1993 with Oxford United. He scored five League goals in twenty-one starts and five games as a substitute for Leeds, before joining Second Division Rotherham United on a free-transfer in March 1993. For once he refound his goal scoring ability and top scored for them. He left Millmoor for Mansfield Town in August 1995 after scoring twenty-five goals from fifty-five starts and twelve games from the bench in League games. After just one League start he moved to Boston United as player/coach in September 1995. He lasted only a matter of weeks and he then re-entered League football with Scunthorpe United on 29th September 1995, but again only lasted two games with the Irons, his last as a player.
